Cyantotypes May 16th 1-3pm (we need sunlight)
Dive into the magic of alternative photography in this hands-on Cyanotype class! In this workshop, you’ll create stunning blue-toned prints using a mix of modern and natural materials. We’ll begin by preparing our own cyanotype paper on heavy-weight surfaces, learning how this light-sensitive process works from the ground up.
While your papers dry, you’ll design and print custom transparencies, gather natural elements like flowers, grasses, and twigs, and cut cardboard shapes that explore both positive and negative space. Once everything is ready, it’s time to experiment and play—arranging your compositions, layering materials, and deciding whether to create a single or double exposure.
Your designs will be secured with glass and clips before heading outside into the sunshine, where the UV light will work its magic. After 6–15 minutes of exposure, we’ll return inside to develop your prints and reveal the striking results.
Each participant will complete two cyanotypes: one in the traditional rich blue, and another transformed with simple household solutions like peroxide, vinegar, and borax to create unexpected tones and variations within a single composition.
This class is full of discovery, creativity, and a little bit of surprise. You’ll leave with two unique prints, hands-on experience with an accessible photographic process, and inspiration to continue exploring cyanotype using everyday materials at home.
