COMMUNITY GALLERY
The Petersburg Area Art League is proud to present the very first installation in our Community Gallery, created by the talented students of Dinwiddie Middle School under the direction of veteran art educator Laura Lockheart.
This powerful installation explores the theme of anti-bullying, giving voice to how middle school students experience, witness, and respond to bullying in their daily lives. Through thoughtful imagery, symbolic color choices, and written reflections, students examine what it means to be excluded—and, more importantly, what it means to choose kindness.
Recurring themes throughout the installation include inclusion, friendship, and the belief that the world is a better place when there is kindness. Viewers will see visual metaphors of open hands, connected hearts, supportive words, and diverse figures standing together. The artwork reflects both the vulnerability and strength of this age group, offering honest insight into their social world while promoting empathy and positive action.
Laura Lockheart, who teaches Art 6, Art 7, Art 8, and Art 1 (high school credit) to eighth graders, has long encouraged her students to use art as a voice. As a veteran educator, she fosters both technical skill and meaningful expression, guiding students to create work that communicates ideas beyond the classroom walls.
This installation not only highlights the creativity of Dinwiddie Middle School students but also sets a powerful tone for the Community Gallery’s mission: showcasing youth voices, celebrating artistic growth, and strengthening our community through art.
