Father/Son: Scalin
A Generational Dialogue in Form, Memory, and Making
On view June 12 – August 8 at PAAL
Father/Son: Scalin brings together the work of artists Chuck Scalin and Noah Scalin in a shared exhibition that explores legacy, process, and the evolving language of visual storytelling across generations.
Presented in the Main Gallery at Petersburg Area Art League, this exhibition invites viewers into a rare creative dialogue between father and son—two distinct artistic voices connected by material curiosity, experimentation, and a lifelong commitment to making.
Exhibition Overview
Rather than framing influence as inheritance, Father/Son: Scalin considers how artistic practice shifts across time, place, and perspective. The works on view move between photography, mixed media, collage, and conceptual approaches, revealing both divergence and resonance in how each artist constructs meaning.
At its core, the exhibition asks a simple but layered question: what does it mean to create in conversation with family, memory, and shared artistic lineage?
About the Artists
Chuck Scalin is a Virginia-based artist whose work spans decades of exploration in visual design, education, and fine art practice. His work often reflects a deep engagement with composition, material, and observation.
Noah Scalin is an interdisciplinary artist known for his work in skull imagery, daily creative practice, and large-scale conceptual projects. His work has been exhibited and published internationally and often examines systems, identity, and transformation through repetition and form.
Together, their practices create a layered conversation between analog and contemporary approaches, discipline and experimentation, structure and spontaneity.
Why It Matters
This exhibition reflects PAAL’s commitment to presenting work that connects personal narrative with broader creative inquiry. Father/Son: Scalin highlights how artistic identity is shaped not only through individual vision, but also through relationships, mentorship, and lived experience.
