PAAL Announces 7th Annual “Ladies’ Luncheon” Event

Annual Fundraiser Features Hats by Ignatius & Picnic Fare

Petersburg, VA  (April 24, 2015) – The Petersburg Area Art League is pleased to announce its upcoming annual Ladies’ Luncheon event, with an indoor picnic theme. In addition to traditional picnic-style fare, Ignatius Creegan returns to display his incredibly popular hats and Sid Scott (owner of Penniston's Alley Antiques and Collectibles) will present a fashion show of jewelry.

The Ladies’ Luncheon will be held on Friday, May 15 at 12:00 noon in Union Station at 102 River Street.

The Ladies’ Luncheon is one of PAAL’s main fundraising events for the year, and the organization utilizes the funds to support artistic and educational programming throughout the year.  The Ladies’ Luncheonproceeds allow PAAL to host its Art Park Summer Concert Series and monthly exhibits and to keep enrollment costs low for summer art camp, youth classes and adult workshops.

“We are always excited to bring a new twist to one of our most successful annual events,” said Russell Kvasnicka, the President of the Board for PAAL.  “Last year, we hosted a special tea, and this year, we’re delighted to present a whole new twist:  an indoor picnic.”  The menu for the event includes:  oven-fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs, three-bean salad and watermelon.

The Ladies’ Luncheon event would not be possible without the support of local sponsoring organizations and individuals:  HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Germaine S. Fauntleroy, Ellen Ende, Nancy Myer, Ann Morriss, Melanie Smith and Elizabeth Cuthbert.

Tickets for the “Ladies’ Luncheon” event are available at the PAAL gallery.  Tickets are $30 for members or $35 for non-members.  Advance ticket purchase is required, and the event is limited to 125 guests.  Call PAAL at 804-861-4611 to purchase tickets or visit the gallery at 7 East Old Street in Old Towne.

March Friday for the Arts is coming soon!

March 13, 2015 at 6 p.m.

Main Gallery & Virginia Linen Service's Members Gallery

A Mixed Media Show with

Three Artists

Opening on Friday, March 13 for Friday for the Arts!, the Petersburg Area Art League will feature “Speak,” a mixed media show of wood, paintings and jewelry reflecting the three artists’ connection with what they hear from the natural and spiritual worlds.

Reverend Johnson is a self-taught wood sculptor, who has been creating for more than 12 years.  He works in cypress, oak, poplar, pine and cedar.  His work centers around how God is speaking to him as he begins to carve and create.  Many of his wood sculptures are of animals, and are playful and inspired in theme.

In the Virginia Linen Service’s Members’ Gallery, local Petersburg artist Valerie Daniels will exhibit her work, a series of paintings featuring serene, vivid environments.  Valerie began painting after retiring from Dominion Power in 2010, and pulls from Americana Art influences.

“Speak” also features the nature-influenced jewelry of Dr. Cynthia Owens Richardson.  “Each piece I design begins with an idea that I have formulated in my mind based on what I see in nature or in my surroundings. I try to take what I see that inspires me and make something that is fresh and unusual,” explains Dr. Richardson.   A native of Ohio, Dr. Richardson followed a career and academic path in psychology, regional planning and social work.  She has always been interested in art, and while finishing her doctorate at VCU, she discovered jewelry making as a way to relax and apply her critical thinking skills to artistic and inspirational ways.

March Friday for the Arts!

March Friday for the Arts will showcase work from Rev. Clyde Johnson, Valerie Daniels and Dr. Cynthia Owens. Stop in to check out some of the best that Petersburg has to offer!

March 13th 6pm to 9pm

"Speak" features the wood carvings of Rev. Clyde Johnson, Sr., a self-taught wood sculptor for over 42 years. His work centers around how God is speaking to him as he begins to carve and create. He works in cypress, oak, poplar, pine and cedar. His work speaks of the awesomeness of God. He will be joined by Valerie Daniels and Dr. Cynthia Owens.

Pulling from Americana Art influences, Valerie Daniels creates vivid, serene environments. After retiring from Dominion Power in 2010 she started pursuing her interest in painting taking pointers from local artist and teacher; Sheila Holland at The Globe.

Dr. Cynthia Owens will be showcasing her truly unique handmade jewelry. "Jewelry design is my way of communicating with The Creator.  It is my way of taking what I see in nature and the physical world and transposing it into a piece of art that represents what God wants me to share with others.  Always driven to work with my hands and after running out of wall space to display my paintings, I decided to create wearable art that I could share with others."
