Petersburg Area Art League Features Digital Works of Clark Ball

October Exhibit Also Includes Paintings by Local Artist Herb Funk

Petersburg, VA (September 29, 2014) – Opening on Friday, October 10 for Friday for the Arts!, the Petersburg Area Art League will feature the work of Clark Ball.  The Virginia Linen Service’s Members’ Gallery will display paintings by local artist Herb Funk.

In the Main Gallery, “Digital Photo Collages” will feature 17 pieces by artist and photographer Clark Ball.  All the works are printed on canvas and created digitally, combining his love for photography, art and computers.

Clark Ball

Clark Ball was born and raised in Washington D.C., the son of a photographer and a painter. He has been a photographer since a very early age, borrowing his father’s cameras and learning film processing and darkroom techniques to make creative and unique prints.  Bell received his BFA in Sculpture and minor in Painting and Printmaking and Electronic Music from VCU.  After graduation he began song writing, performing and playing in various bands in the Richmond Va. area, focusing artistic energies on his music as his primary creative outlet.  He has been an IT professional and musician for the last 25 years and currently plays bass in the country band, The Honky Tonk Experience.

“Earlier this year, I discovered a unique software application that allowed me to combine two separate images in any way I choose, by using a touch pad and my own index finger,” explains Ball.  “Instead of having to use a mouse, keyboard or other technological means, I found that I really enjoyed the tactile aspect of making images in this way, and that I felt much more connected to the work. It's like finger painting with photos as my paint.”

Bell further explains that his goal is to combine seemingly unrelated objects or textures together into something unique or surreal.

Herb Funk

In the Virginia Linen Service’s Members’ Gallery, local Petersburg artist Herb Funk will exhibit approximately 20 paintings in his show, “Sunrise, Sunset.”  His landscapes are painted with oil and reflect a theme of sunshine.  Herb Funk has exhibited at a number of shows in the Petersburg area and has won several awards in local juried shows.

Funk has been painting for about 12 years, always working in oil.  He studied under local artist Sheila Holland and is inspired primarily by French and American Impressionists.

Funk explained, “My area of interest is landscapes and nature scenes with an emphasis on sunlight and its impact on the landscape scenes, especially bright spots and shadows, and the brilliant colors that appear in the sky.”

The October exhibit runs through November 8, 2014.

August 2014

Petersburg Area Art League Features Permanent Collection
August Exhibit Also Includes Works by Students in PAAL’s Art Camp

Petersburg, VA (August 4, 2014) – Opening on Friday, August 8 for Friday for the Arts!, the Petersburg Area Art League will feature a special exhibition of its permanent collection. The Virginia Linen Service’s Members’ Gallery will display selected art works created by the children in PAAL’s Summer Art Camp.

More than 30 pieces from the permanent collection will be displayed. The pieces range from realism to traditional styles to abstract – such as an original drawing by P. Buckley Moss and a modern-styled relief sculpture of the human eye. “It’s really a special peek into the amazing artwork PAAL has been amassing for over 40 years,” said Russell Kvasnicka, President of the Board of Directors for PAAL. “PAAL’s permanent collection has been building over the years, but is rarely on display for the public, since all three of the galleries in PAAL are always showing exhibits on a monthly basis,” he explained. “Remember the Poplar Lawn Art Show from years past? Every spring PAAL sponsored this very popular art show in the park, and would select a “Best in Show” which became part of PAAL's permanent collection. Many of these “Best in Show” pieces will be on display for everyone to enjoy this month,” Kvasnicka added.

In the Virginia Linen Service’s Members’ Gallery, the walls will be filled with works created by children participating in the past five weeks of summer camp at PAAL. This year, they have benefitted from the expertise of eight different teachers to help them create a wide variety of projects. These projects range from 6-foot tall self-portraits to creating their own creature from paper mache. “Each week, more than 30 children filled the galleries at PAAL with excitement and creativity, and we’re delighted to show off their work,” Kvasnicka said. Mickael Broth, PAAL's muralist, taught two weeks of classes guiding the children through large nature weavings and brightly colored seating made from recycled pallets. These two projects will be on display in the Art Park.

The July exhibit runs through September 6, 2014.
