“The Art of Children's Book Illustration” is a unique showcase of art from a variety of regional artists.  The samples of work range from finished product to brainstorming sketches, and include photography, graphite, digital and watercolor.  Nine artists – all with ties to Central Virginia – are included in the show.  These artists’ works have appeared in various books and other publications, and the artists live across the country, some still in Central Virginia. Each work in the show features insight into the creative process of the artist.

“PAAL is excited to bring our patrons such a wide array of talent that really showcases how creative our local children's artists really are,” said Nick Crider, Exhibit Coordinator for the Petersburg Area Art League.  “With such a niche, I was overwhelmed when I found out how much talent we actually have close by.”

The artists joining the show include:

Terry Crider:

Theodore Taylor III:

Bizhan Khodabandeh:

Carolyn Schallmo:

Phillip Hillker:

Jared Cullum:

Each of the artists featured in “The Art of Children's Book Illustration” has received multiple awards and recognitions for their works.  Just a few of these accolades include:

·      The Silver Medal for Comics and Cartooning through the Society of Illustrators (Bizhan Khodabandeh)

·      2015 Panelist for Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators (Charlotte Rodenberg)

The Virginia Linen Service’s Members’ Gallery will exhibit the art of Alva Davies, a local artist of pen and ink drawings.  The pieces in the exhibit will range include 6 x 8 inch and 8 x 10 inch sizes and are reminiscent of the countryside in England.

Alva Davies

Born in England, Alva came to the United States in the 1960s, but didn’t start drawing until 2001.  She started doodling on a small note pad and co-workers she had gone to art school, so after some encouraging words from friends, she decided to buy a small art pad.  “Many of my drawings are from memories of growing up in Cheshire, England – the cottages, the woods and country scenes, streams and stone bridges,” explained Alva.  “I have so many fond memories from my childhood of walking through the woods and countryside with my father, my sisters and our dog, and these paintings depict those memories.”

The September exhibition runs through Saturday, October 3.
