Opening on Friday, March 13 for Friday for the Arts!, the Petersburg Area Art League will feature “Speak,” a mixed media show of wood, paintings and jewelry reflecting the three artists’ connection with what they hear from the natural and spiritual worlds.
Reverend Johnson is a self-taught wood sculptor, who has been creating for more than 12 years. He works in cypress, oak, poplar, pine and cedar. His work centers around how God is speaking to him as he begins to carve and create. Many of his wood sculptures are of animals, and are playful and inspired in theme.
In the Virginia Linen Service’s Members’ Gallery, local Petersburg artist Valerie Daniels will exhibit her work, a series of paintings featuring serene, vivid environments. Valerie began painting after retiring from Dominion Power in 2010, and pulls from Americana Art influences.
“Speak” also features the nature-influenced jewelry of Dr. Cynthia Owens Richardson. “Each piece I design begins with an idea that I have formulated in my mind based on what I see in nature or in my surroundings. I try to take what I see that inspires me and make something that is fresh and unusual,” explains Dr. Richardson. A native of Ohio, Dr. Richardson followed a career and academic path in psychology, regional planning and social work. She has always been interested in art, and while finishing her doctorate at VCU, she discovered jewelry making as a way to relax and apply her critical thinking skills to artistic and inspirational ways.
