The Petersburg Area Art League is delighted to welcome back Ignatius Creegan and Rod Givens for this year’s fifth annual Ladies Luncheon on Friday, June 7. The charming and historic setting of the old train station will be the backdrop for their show, “Now Arriving,” which will feature a fashion display and sale of fine millinery.

Tickets are now on sale for PAAL’s fifth annual Ladies Luncheon held on Friday, June 7 at 11:30 a.m. in Union Station in Old Towne Petersburg. Tickets are $30 for members and $35 for non-members and available at the Petersburg Area Art League or online at www.paalart.org. All proceeds benefit the programs of PAAL.

“The PAAL Ladies Luncheons always have an amazing luncheon menu and this year, there will be a very fun entertaining show with touches of pink,” said Ellen Ende, Chair of the event. “I plan to buy another hat to match my outfit that will be perfect for arriving at the train station,” she added.

“Now Arriving” will feature straw hats for the summer season. Founded in 1985 by Ignatius, Ignatius Hats has traveled across the country winning many juried shows. Ignatius Hats was previously located in New York and Richmond, but now its permanent home has been in Petersburg since 2003. Rod Givens joined Ignatius Hats in 1994, and in the last twenty-five years, Ignatius Hats have been seen by millions in various televisions shows and movies from “Glee” to HBO’s “John Adams.”

Summer Art Camps for Youth Offered at PAAL

Petersburg, Virginia – The Petersburg Area Art League is once again offering its popular Summer Art Camps for children. There will be five one-week long sessions between July 8 and August 9 for rising 1^st graders to rising 9^th graders and one session for pre-school age children ages 2 ½ to 5 years old.

Each summer art camp session runs daily from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with breakfast and lunch included. The tuition is $125 per week for member and $150 for non-members. The pre-school session will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and include breakfast and a snack. The cost for the preschool session is $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Fibers, Felts, Fabrics & Fringes!

Grades: 1^st- 4^th Grade

Instructor: Stephanie Barr

We’ll explore these materials throughout the week as we incorporated bookmaking, hand sewing, weaving, batik and collage. By the end of the week you’ll have a collection of diverse artwork all created from Fibers, Felts, Fabrics & Fringes!

Skateboard Designs & Portraits

Grades: 5^th – 9^th Grade

Instructor: Shari Mason

Students will spend the week doing a variety of thought-providing, creative art projects including skateboard deck designs and movie star portraits. Students will use Sharpie markers to tell their own story on a real wooden skateboard deck and will create portraits by dividing up a picture of a movie star by different values they see and paint their portrait. In between these two main projects, students will work on three additional projects: artist trading cards, a whimsical collage man, and zentangles.

Mural Painting

Did you see the mural at PAAL yet? Well, we have two more walls to go! For two weeks of Summer Camp, Robert and Mickael will be teaching the kids about mural painting and doing the other half of the PAAL Education Gallery with the theme of art space camp.

Comic Making

Grades: 5^th – 9^th Grade

Instructor: James Callahan

Students will each learn the process of making a comic and have a comic finished by the end of the week. James Callahan is a professional illustrator and comic maker and has done work for Marvel Comics, a slew of Skateboard companies, professional musicians, and his work have been shown in Thrasher Magazine on multiple occasions.

Midsummer Mashup

Calling young artists – let’s get messy! Do you want to dive into drawing, get creative with collage, practice printmaking and painting, or attempt assemblage? Then join us for a week of art exploration and experimentation, working independently and collaboratively on projects inspired by cities, architecture, nature, other artists and your imagination.

Students will spend the week having art-making adventures with three very fun, hands-on art activities. First, students will create oversize sea creatures using paper mache techniques, then students will make their own individual piece of tie-dye art and collaboratively, work on a large wall hanging. Lastly, students will create various styles of printing making, including silk screen and monotype assemblage printing.

This fun session will introduce the young children to the arts by exploring paper folding, hand printing, and painting techniques.

Art Camp with Mama Sue

Grades: 1^st – 4^th Grade

Instructor: Suzanne Vaughn

Students will participate in a diverse series of activities from surrealistic photograph collages, clay pots, watercolor paintings and other mixed media activities.

Over the Appomattox Opening April

For the month of April, the Petersburg Area Art League will feature shows in three separate spaces. In the Main Gallery, works by Richmond-based artists are displayed; the WestStar Members’ Gallery features the paintings of local artist Valerie Daniels; and in the upstairs Education Center, PAAL’s new wall mural will be unveiled. All three shows open Friday, April 12 as part of Friday for the Arts!

Downstairs in the Main Gallery, a group of Richmond-based illustrators are exhibitors in the “Across the Appomattox” show. Katie McBride, Mickael Broth, Tyler Thomas, Larry Laroca, James Callahan of Barf Comics, and El Kamino will display watercolors, canvas paintings, prints, illustrations, and more in the exhibit. These artists work in a variety of media, from skateboard design to murals to graffiti art to watercolor. “By working within the greater Richmond area artistic community, we’ve had a chance to get to know one another, and we’re very excited to bring our work together into one show,” explained artist Mickael Broth.

In the WestStar Members’ Gallery, local artist Valerie Daniels is exhibiting a show of her Americana art. “I enjoy painting scenes from all over the country, from different time periods and of different subjects,” explained Daniels. She recently won awards for two of her paintings: one of a farm scene in Albemarle County and another of a widow at her husband’s gravesite after the Civil War. A frequent exhibitor in juried art shows, Daniels will have approximately 25 paintings on display and available for purchase. In addition to being a member of PAAL, she is a member of the Petersburg Regional Art Center (where she runs Studio 216), The Artists Circle and the Chester Artists Association.

In the upstairs Education Center, a brand new mural will be unveiled. Completed over the course of a week in collaboration with local youth enrolled in PAAL’s Spring Break Art Camp, Richmond artists Robert Cataldo and Mickael Broth are leading the project. The two artists created a design as a framework for the kids to work within, but provided plenty of room for individual creativity and imagery. “We really love working with kids and helping them to bring their creativity and artistic imaginations to life on a huge mural,” said Cataldo. The mural is approximately 30 feet wide and 16 feet high.

Petersburg Area Art League Easter Egg Roll

The Petersburg Area Art League is inviting all children to the Art Park to celebrate Easter! PAAL will host a two-hour Easter Egg Roll and craft party for kids of all ages on Saturday, March 30 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Children will be able to participate in an Easter Egg roll outdoors in the Art Park and then work on some Easter art activities inside the gallery.

“Seeing the Easter Egg Roll at the White House each year inspired us to host an Easter Egg Roll here in Petersburg,” said Russell Kvasnicka, President of the Board of Directors of PAAL. “Our Art Park is such a wonderful space and we want people to enjoy it as much as possible. We couldn’t imagine a better way to welcome in spring than spend some time in our Art Park,” Kvasnicka explained.

PAAL will provide the eggs for the Easter Egg Roll. Staff and volunteers will assist the children in the roll as well as with their craft activity. A light snack will be provided, as well as candy for prizes. The event is open to all preschool and elementary age children. The Easter Egg Roll will take place in the Art Park, adjacent to the PAAL building and the craft party will take place in PAAL’s upstairs gallery at 7 East Old Street in Old Towne Petersburg.

Space is limited, so reservations are required by Wednesday, March 28 at 5 p.m. The Easter Egg Roll and craft party is free for members and $5 per child for non-members (to cover supplies). ARGS + VSU + Josette Brogan Openings Friday

For the month of March, the Petersburg Area Art League will feature shows in three separate galleries. In the Main Gallery, works by students at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School are displayed; the Members’ Gallery features Josette Brogran’s pastels; and in the upstairs Education Gallery, works from Virginia State University are displayed.

The Appomattox Regional Governor’s School Visual Arts Department is exhibiting in the PAAL gallery for the 8th year as part of their Student Spring Gala Exhibition. This year’s student show will feature recently produced, award-winning drawing, painting, graphic design, photography and sculpture. Opening in 1999, the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School is a public regional magnet high school in downtown Petersburg and is one of 18 Virginia Governor’s Schools. It draws approximately 350 students from 14 area localities.

In the Members’ Gallery, pastels by local Petersburg resident Josette Brogan are on display. Her exhibit includes a wide selection of smaller-format paintings (her largest is 16” x 20”) that focus on the tranquility of beautiful things in nature. “I strive the capture the beauty of natural objects as they exist, rather than imagined things,” said Brogran. A life-long admirer of pastels, she only began painting five years ago, and paints still life and landscape images on paper.

In the upstairs Education Gallery, a selection of two-dimensional works by art major students at Virginia State University will be on display. The exhibit will include works from students in mixed medium and landscape painting classes, as well as two-dimensional methods and materials classes, and printing-making classes.

PAAL’s Hearts and Crafts Party.

The Petersburg Area Art League is inviting all children into the gallery to get ready for Valentine’s Day! PAAL will host a two-hour Valentine’s Day craft party for kids of all ages on Saturday, February 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Children will be able to design and create their own Valentines for their loved ones.

“Making your own cards is a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and we’re excited to gather lots of supplies and help the children use their artistic talents to create personalized cards,” said Russell Kvasnicka, President of the Board of Directors of PAAL. “The children who attend art camp and classes at PAAL and who play in the Art Park always fill the atmosphere with excitement and this is PAAL’s way of saying thank you,” Kvasnicka explained.

PAAL will provide all of the supplies and materials needed to make the Valentines Day cards. Staff and volunteers will assist the children as needed as they create their Valentines. Painted Objects Collection Gallery Talks on Jan. 25 and 26

The Petersburg Area Art League has opened the new year with an exhibit of paintings and painted objects from the collection of local resident Alexander C. “Sandy” Graham, Jr. To complement his show, Graham will present two gallery talks on Friday, January 25 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, January 26 at 3 p.m.

The gallery talks are open to the public and free of cost. However, space is limited to 50 people and open on a first come, first served basis. (No advance reservations are accepted.) Due to popular demand, the second gallery talk on Saturday afternoon was scheduled.

The sampling from the Graham collection is comprised mostly of American and European paintings executed between 1850 and 1930, as well as American folk art. The common theme in all the pieces on display is paint: from 17^th century colored Dutch maps to 18^th century engravings to a 20^th century painting by Grandma Moses, the painted pieces illustrate different styles, techniques and subject matter.

The exhibit runs through February 2.

Last year, Graham exhibited his first show at PAAL, “American Paintings (1840-1940),” arranged to highlight the evolution of American painting from early portraiture and Hudson River School examples to works completed shortly before World War II. Graham began collecting fine art and folk art about 10 years ago to complement his collection of period American antique furniture.

Historic Collection of Alexander C. Graham, Jr. to open this week

The Petersburg Area Art League will open the new year with an exhibit of paintings and painted objects from the collection of local resident Alexander C. “Sandy” Graham, Jr.

The exhibit opens on January 11, 2013 for Friday for the Arts and runs through February 2. Petersburg Area Art League (PAAL) members are invited to a free gallery talk and private opening on Thursday, January 10. The public is invited to the opening on January 11 and to a free gallery talk by Mr. Graham on January 25 at 6 p.m.

Graham began collecting fine art and folk art about 10 years ago to complement his collection of period American antique furniture. “Years ago, my mother criticized my home as looking like an antique shop – a clutter of brown furniture devoid of any art, porcelain or silver,” comments Graham. “She was right, of course, and I turned my attention to acquiring fine art for my high-style, period furniture and folk art pieces for my country furniture,” explains Graham. He goes on to joke that, “Today, my mother says that my rooms ‘look like a museum.’ It is not always easy to please your mother.”

PAAL Winter Break Classes for Youth

The Petersburg Area Arts League (PAAL) is offering two art programs for children during the winter holiday break.

On December 19, PAAL will offer a two-hour children’s class on learning about the holiday season through food and art, and on December 27, there will be a four-hour winter art camp focusing on using blue and white colors for holiday-themed art.
