This Spring Break, PAAL will be holding two classes daily on mural painting for youth of all ages. PAAL will be painting a mural inside our education center with the help of some Richmond Artist. To learn more about this project please call PAAL today.

Looking to expand your homeschool experiences? Join us for beginner – intermediate (K-5) art class specifically designed to accomodate homeschoolers. Taught by an art educator & homeschooling Mom of 3, children will be introduced to artists, art works & techniques to broaden their knowledge and abilities in the visual arts over a 6 week period. This is a great opportunity for children to meet other area homeschoolers while having fun and getting creative in the PAAL studios.
Stephanie Barr has been a homeschooling Mom of 3 in Chesterfield since 2006 and holds a BFA from VCU in Art Education. Stephanie teaches a preschool art class at PAAL and has taught or led numerous classes with children of all ages over the last 20 years. Her interests & skills include many forms of creativity including gardening, cooking, bookmaking & collage but most avidly she pursues her passion for photography.

Intro to Point and Shoot Digital Photography for Kids

The Camera Club will give a lesson on basic camera instructions and composition. The students will take photographs of nearby locations, download them onto computers and use a simple version of photoshop to enhance the photos. Students need to bring a disk or a flashdrive to download their photos. The Photo Club will provide the point and shoot cameras. However if a student owns a camera please bring it with the instruction book to class for personal instructions.
Art Journaling for Kids with Carrie Smith

Ages: Rising 4th-6th Graders
Art journaling is a great activity for young learners. Instead of focusing on the end product, art journaling focuses on the joy of creating. This 4-week class will encourage students to experiment with a variety of media, explore different techniques and express their thoughts, observations and feelings. When it comes to art journaling, there is no “right way” – all you need to do is play.
Open to rising 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Each student will receive a journal at the first class which will be theirs to keep.
Art Around the World with Stephanie Barr

Completed K-2nd graders! Join us Monday mornings as we explore the arts and artists of native cultures around the globe. We’ll learn about art forms from Africa, Panama, Japan, New Zealand through a variety of media & sensory experiences. Then we’ll replicate these art forms in various mediums and we’ll document all of our explorations in a special, limited edition passport available only to our PAAL Summer Adventurers!

Want to create your own superhero? Discover the world of comic book art as you learn how to tell fantastic stories through hand-drawn comics. We’ll explore the who, what, when, where and why of storytelling and learn some flashy comic drawing techniques.
Elizabeth Essex has been the Art and Photojournalism Teacher at Brunswick High School in Brunswick County, Virginia since 2009. She received a Masters in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelors in Fine Arts, Painting Emphasis, from Virginia Tech. She has a wide variety of skills and interests aside from visual art including playing piano, dancing, working with computers, and helping with theater sets.

Just in time for summer! In this exciting, fun class, students will get a chance to create their very own tie-dye t-shirts! Tie-dye is a modern version of traditional dyeing methods that have been used in many cultures for thousands of years! It was made popular in the United States during the 1960′s Hippie movement, and the process is still enjoyed today. Sign up to create your own, colorful unique garment in this simple introductory class! Students may bring their own plain white t-shirt to dye, or pay a $5 materials fee and a t-shirt will be provided. Stop Motion Animation

In this class, you will learn how to sculpt your own original characters and build mixed-media sets while you work with others to make a stop-motion animation movie! Practice voice acting and computer editing to complete your animation. Bring a flash drive to have a personal copy of your movie or share it with friends on Youtube!
Hopi Village Art

Learn about the art, history & architecture of a Arizona Native American Hopi Village. The students will build a Hopi village using painted boxes, sticks, and grasses. Each student will decorate a Kachina doll from toilet paper rolls, paper, markers and feathers. The combined artworks will result in a Hopi Village scene during the corn harvest season.
Mask-making Workshop
September 25, 2010 (3rd grade and up)
1-4pm, $15, register at PAAL.
Artist and owner of Jackson Sage Botanical Skin Care Erika Hollen will teach kids to make masks from repurposed materials; milk jugs, cardboard and paper will be magically transformed, helping kids figure out what they can do simply using the recycling bin! This class runs at the same time as the adult-level bookbinding workshop, so parents can join us for a class, too!
